Systememulering, often shortened to emulation, is the process of using one computer system to imitate the behavior of another computer system. This imitation is achieved through software, known as an emulator, that translates the instructions and signals of the emulated system into a format that the host system can understand and execute.

The primary purpose of system emulation is to allow software or hardware designed for one platform to run on a different, incompatible platform. This is particularly useful for preserving access to older software, such as video games or legacy business applications, that might otherwise be inaccessible due to hardware obsolescence or operating system changes. Emulation also plays a role in software development, enabling developers to test their applications on various target environments without needing the physical hardware for each.

The accuracy and performance of an emulator are crucial. A highly accurate emulator will replicate the original system's behavior precisely, ensuring compatibility. Performance refers to how quickly the emulated system runs compared to the original; achieving near real-time performance is often a significant challenge.

Common applications of system emulation include video game consoles, where emulators allow classic games to be played on modern computers or mobile devices. It is also used in scientific research, digital preservation, and for running specialized software on general-purpose computers.
