Sysloglogger

Sysloglogger is a software library or tool designed to provide a simple interface for applications to emit log messages to the system logger, or syslog. By encapsulating the details of the syslog protocol, it allows developers to send messages with a chosen facility (such as daemon, auth, or user) and a severity level, while optionally attaching metadata such as the application name, process id, and timestamp. Messages can be written to the local syslog daemon or transmitted to a centralized collector over UDP, TCP, or TLS, depending on configuration.

Typical features include configurable log levels, facility selection, automatic inclusion of host information, support for standard formats (RFC 3164 and RFC 5424), and optional structured data. Many implementations offer asynchronous buffering, message batching, and integration with language-specific logging APIs to minimize I/O impact.

Sysloglogger implementations exist across programming ecosystems; the concept is widely supported as bindings or adapters that map a language's log records to syslog messages. They are commonly used to centralize application logs with system and security logs and to feed data into log management stacks such as rsyslog or syslog-ng.

Operational considerations include transport security, reliability of delivery, log rotation compatibility, and compatibility with containerized or cloud environments where /dev/log may not be present. Proper configuration of facilities, severities, and filtering is important to avoid log flood or leakage of sensitive information.
