Syntymämerkintöihin, often translated as birthmarks, are common skin discolorations or blemishes that are present at birth or appear shortly after. They are generally benign and can vary significantly in appearance, size, color, and location. The exact cause of most birthmarks is not fully understood, but they are believed to result from an overgrowth of blood vessels, pigment cells, or other skin tissues.

There are two main categories of birthmarks: vascular birthmarks and pigmented birthmarks. Vascular birthmarks, such as salmon patches (stork bites) and hemangiomas, are caused by an abnormal formation of blood vessels. Salmon patches are typically flat, pink or red, and often fade over time. Hemangiomas are raised, red or purple marks that can grow rapidly in infancy and then slowly shrink. Pigmented birthmarks, like moles and café-au-lait spots, are caused by clusters of pigment cells. Moles can vary in color from tan to dark brown and can be flat or raised. Café-au-lait spots are light brown, flat patches that are often larger than moles.

Most birthmarks are harmless and do not require treatment. However, some may be associated with underlying medical conditions or can cause cosmetic concerns. In certain cases, if a birthmark is causing health issues, is growing rapidly, or is in a sensitive location, medical intervention may be considered. Treatment options can include medication, laser therapy, or surgical removal, depending on the type and characteristics of the birthmark. Parents are often advised to monitor birthmarks for any changes in size, shape, or color, and to consult a healthcare professional if any concerns arise.
