Synesthesie

Synesthesie, also written synesthesia in English, is a perceptual condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway involuntarily elicits an additional experience in a second, distinct pathway. The extra experiences are automatic and perceived as part of normal perception rather than as deliberate imagination.

The most common forms include grapheme–color synesthesia (letters or numbers evoke specific colors), sound–color synesthesia (sounds trigger colors), and sequence forms such as number-form synesthesia (numbers arranged in a mental spatial map). Other variants include lexical–gustatory synesthesia (words or names evoke tastes) and personification (objects or letters elicit personalities). For many synesthetes, the associations are stable over time and begin in childhood.

Prevalence estimates vary, but synesthesia is considered relatively rare, occurring in perhaps 1–4% of the population depending on how it is assessed. It often runs in families, suggesting a genetic component, though the exact inheritance pattern is not fully understood. Most cases are congenital, though rare acquired forms have been reported after brain injury, migraine, or drug exposure.

Causes and neuroscience research propose models involving increased cross-activation between sensory regions or disinhibition of feedback connections within the brain. Neuroimaging studies have noted atypical connectivity between areas such as color processing regions and other sensory or linguistic areas. These findings support the view of synesthesia as a developmental variation in cortical wiring rather than a disorder.

Diagnosis is typically based on self-report corroborated by consistency tests across time. The condition is usually not disruptive and is often described as a benign variation of perception. Synesthesia is studied for insights into sensory processing, memory, and creativity.
