Common axes for defining disease types include etiology (causes such as infectious agents, genetic mutations, metabolic dysfunction, autoimmune responses, or environmental factors), the organ system affected (for example cardiovascular, nervous, or gastrointestinal), and the underlying pathophysiological mechanism (inflammatory, degenerative, neoplastic, metabolic, autoimmune, vascular). Temporal patterns are also used, distinguishing acute, chronic, recurrent, or episodic diseases. Genetic background forms another axis, separating congenital or hereditary diseases from those acquired later in life, and often distinguishing monogenic from polygenic or multifactorial conditions.
