Sydämentykytykset, commonly known as heart palpitations, refer to a sensation where an individual becomes aware of their own heartbeat. This awareness can manifest as a feeling of the heart beating too fast, pounding, fluttering, or skipping a beat. While often alarming, heart palpitations are usually harmless and can be triggered by a variety of factors.

Common causes include stress, anxiety, and fear, which can lead to the release of adrenaline. Physical exertion, such as during exercise, is another frequent cause, as the heart naturally beats faster to supply oxygen to the muscles. Certain substances can also induce palpitations, including caffeine found in coffee and tea, nicotine from tobacco products, and alcohol. Some medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, can have palpitations as a side effect. Hormonal changes, such as those experienced during pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause, are also linked to increased occurrences of heart palpitations.

In most cases, heart palpitations are not indicative of a serious underlying medical condition and resolve on their own once the triggering factor is removed. However, if palpitations are accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting, it is important to seek medical attention. These additional symptoms could suggest a more significant cardiac issue. A doctor can assess the situation, determine the cause of the palpitations, and recommend appropriate management strategies if necessary. Lifestyle modifications, such as reducing stress, limiting caffeine intake, and avoiding other triggers, can often help alleviate the frequency and intensity of heart palpitations.
