Surulere

Surulere is a residential and commercial district on the Lagos mainland in Lagos State, Nigeria. It combines housing, markets, offices, and light industry in a dense urban grid. Major streets such as Ojuelegba Road, Ikorodu Road, and Bode Thomas Street connect Surulere to central Lagos and to surrounding districts.

The area began expanding during Lagos’ mid-20th-century growth. Its name is of Yoruba origin and reflects the linguistic and cultural roots of the region. Surulere has developed into a busy mixed-use neighbourhood with a strong commercial core and a sizeable residential population.

Landmarks include the National Stadium Lagos, a major sports venue located in Surulere, which anchors recreational and commercial facilities. The district also hosts markets, schools, places of worship, and entertainment venues that illustrate Lagos’ mixed-use urban character.

Public and private transport networks serve Surulere, with routes along major corridors and access to Lagos’ expressways. Administratively, it is part of the Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, and local services cover street maintenance, security, and waste management.
