Supramental

Supramental is a term used in the philosophy of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother to describe a level of consciousness that is beyond the ordinary mind and the overmind. In their integral yoga, the supramental consciousness is a divine, universal, and transformative power that can govern life and matter, enabling a spiritual realization to be carried into practical, terrestrial existence. It is conceived as both a state of being and a dynamic force capable of reshaping human nature and earthly reality according to a divine plan.

Origins and scope: The concept appears in Sri Aurobindo's and The Mother's writings in the early to mid-20th century, most notably in The Life Divine, Savitri, and Letters on Yoga. The doctrinal program of the yoga is the descent of the supramental consciousness from the higher planes into the terrestrial world, leading to a new evolutionary stage for humanity—often described as the transformation or divinization of matter.

Process and implications: The process is described as a descent of a supramental truth-consciousness through the mind, turning life-energy toward a divine purpose, and ultimately creating a new species and a new creation wherein matter itself participates in consciousness. This transformation is said to occur in stages, with the mind, life, and body gradually brought into alignment with the supramental principle.

Reception: The notion is central within the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and in modern interpretations of his integral yoga. Outside these circles, the concept is treated as a metaphysical or mystical doctrine without empirical validation.
