Superjet

Superjet is a name used for several transportation products, most notably the Sukhoi Superjet 100, a regional jet developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC). The program was launched in the mid-2000s to produce a Western-competitive regional airliner for both domestic and international routes.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) is a twin-engine, low-wing regional jet designed to accommodate about 75 to 95 passengers, depending on configuration. It is powered by two PowerJet SaM-146 engines, a joint venture between Safran and NPO Saturn. The aircraft features modern avionics and cabin design and is intended for short- to medium-range operations, with performance suited for European and Asian networks. Final assembly is conducted at the KnAAPO facility in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Russia, with components sourced from a mix of domestic and international suppliers.

Development and production began in the 2000s, with the first flight in May 2008 and entry into service in 2011, led by Aeroflot as the launch customer. Over the ensuing years, the program faced delays and quality challenges but continued to attract orders and to operate with several airlines, primarily in Russia and nearby regions, as well as a small number of international operators. The SSJ100 represents Russia’s attempt to establish a domestic regional-jet capability and to compete in the regional market through continued updates and aftersales support.

Overall, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 remains the best-known model bearing the Superjet name. The term also appears in other contexts as a brand designation, but the SSJ100 is the primary reference in aviation.
