Suojainryhmiä, or protective groups, are temporary chemical functionalities used in organic synthesis to mask reactive sites on a molecule. By inserting a protecting group, chemists can selectively manipulate other parts of the molecule without affecting the protected site. After the desired transformations are complete, the protecting group is removed under controlled conditions, restoring the original functionality.

A wide variety of suojainryhmiä are employed, each chosen based on the chemical environment, the required stability, and the ease of installation and removal. Common examples include the tert‑butoxycarbonyl (Boc) group for carbamates, the acetyl (Ac) group for alcohols, and the trifluoroacetyl (TFA) group for amines.
