This tradition is particularly common in rural areas of Finland, especially in regions where cattle are grazed outdoors. The markings are typically temporary and designed to be visible until the animals are brought in for the winter or slaughtered.

Historically, summamerkinnällä served several practical purposes. It helped herders distinguish their own animals from those of their neighbors, especially when herds were grazed communally or in large open pastures.
