Sumennuksen

Sumennuksen (genitive of sumennus) is a Finnish term describing the act or result of making something less distinct, especially by reducing sharpness or detail in a visual image. The root sumu means fog, which conveys haziness and obscured detail. In everyday language sumennus can refer to both optical phenomena and digital processing that soften edges and reduce clarity.

In photography and film, sumennus is used to evoke mood, imply distance, or conceal sensitive details. It can be achieved optically through soft-focus techniques, diffusion filters, or intentional defocusing, or digitally via blur operations such as Gaussian blur, box blur, or selective region blurring. Artists may also exploit depth-of-field to create a sumennuksen effect, where the subject remains relatively sharp while the background appears hazy.

Privacy, ethics, and media practice are common contexts for sumennus. Blurring is routinely applied to faces, license plates, or other identifying details in journalism, social media, and public communications to comply with privacy laws and protect individuals. In Europe, data protection regulations influence when and how blurring is used as a privacy-preserving technique.
