Sulfonoitumista

Sulfonoitumista is a Finnish term that translates to sulfonation in English. It refers to a chemical reaction in which a sulfonic acid group (-SO3H) is introduced into a molecule. This process is a type of electrophilic aromatic substitution when applied to aromatic compounds, although it can also occur with aliphatic substances.

The sulfonation reaction typically involves treating the substrate with a sulfonating agent, most commonly concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) or fuming sulfuric acid (oleum, a solution of sulfur trioxide SO3 in sulfuric acid). The reactive species is generally considered to be sulfur trioxide (SO3), which acts as an electrophile. The sulfonic acid group is highly polar and water-soluble, which often makes the sulfonated product more soluble in water than the original compound.
