Subtitreerimist, often referred to as subtitling, is the process of displaying text on a screen, typically in films, television programs, or online videos, to represent the dialogue and other relevant audio information. This text appears at the bottom of the screen, synchronized with the spoken words, allowing viewers to follow the content even if they cannot hear the audio clearly or do not understand the language being spoken.

The primary purpose of subtitling is to enhance accessibility and comprehension. For individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, subtitles provide a crucial means of understanding audiovisual content. Similarly, for viewers watching content in a foreign language, subtitles serve as a translation, bridging linguistic barriers. Subtitling can also be beneficial for those in noisy environments or for learners of a new language who wish to reinforce their listening and reading skills.

There are two main types of subtitling: closed captions and open subtitles. Closed captions are an optional feature that viewers can turn on or off. They often include additional information beyond dialogue, such as sound effects and speaker identification, making them more comprehensive. Open subtitles, on the other hand, are permanently embedded into the video image and cannot be removed. They typically only display dialogue. The creation of subtitles involves careful transcription of audio, translation into the target language, and precise timing to match the on-screen action.
