The term highlights approaches that operate by substitution rather than by transformation, aggregation, or derivation without replacement.

In cryptography, substitution-based schemes replace plaintext symbols with ciphertext symbols according to a mapping. Classic monoalphabetic ciphers use a fixed substitution; polyalphabetic schemes vary substitutions during encryption. Substitution is vulnerable to frequency analysis, and modern practice combines it with transposition or other operations to improve security.

In chemistry, substitution-based reactions involve replacing a substituent on a molecule with another atom or group, often via SN1 or SN2 mechanisms. SN2 features concerted attack by a nucleophile with leaving group departure; SN1 proceeds through a carbocation intermediate. Solvent, temperature, and steric effects influence rate and outcome.

In formal linguistics and rewriting systems, substitution rules replace symbols with strings, forming the basis of parsers and transformations in computation. Substitution-based approaches enable systematic rewriting without introducing entirely new structures.

Limitations include potential combinatorial growth and vulnerability to analysis; practical use often requires additional constraints or hybrid techniques.
