Subandhus

Subandhus is a coastal municipality in Veridia, on the Northshore Peninsula. It covers about 18 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 2,300 in 2023. The town combines a historic harbor district with newer residential and light-industrial areas.

The name Subandhus is of uncertain origin; local tradition links it to a hilltop inn and a nearby farmstead, with "sub" and "hus" cited in an old dialect.

Historically, Subandhus grew from an 18th-century fishing hamlet into a regional port in the 19th century, with shipyards closing in the mid-20th century. Modern utilities and education were expanded afterward; today the harbor remains the economic focus.

Governance is by a municipal council of eight members elected for four-year terms; the mayor chairs the council. The town collaborates with the county on regional planning and emergency services.

The economy centers on fishing and aquaculture, complemented by small-scale manufacturing and seasonal tourism. The harbor supports a modest fleet and a fish auction hall; a small hydropower facility (2012) contributes to the grid.

Subandhus has a temperate maritime climate with cool summers and mild winters. Precipitation is moderate, and the landscape features rocky shores, a sheltered harbor, and hillside housing.

Culturally, Subandhus hosts an annual Sea Festival and maintains the Subandhus Maritime Museum. Education is provided by a primary and a secondary school, with vocational programs in fisheries and hospitality.

Transportation relies on regional roads, bus services, and a short ferry link to neighboring towns; the nearest rail connection is in Bayview, about 25 kilometers away.
