Stubbejaceae

Stubbejaceae is a hypothetical family of flowering plants proposed in some botanical literature as a provisional taxon for a small group of tropical genera. The family is not currently recognized by major taxonomic authorities and has no formal circumscription in the APG system. In speculative classifications, Stubbejaceae is described as a dicotyledonous family comprising herbaceous perennials and small shrubs with opposite, simple leaves and entire margins.

The type genus is Stubbeja; other included genera in the speculative circumscription include Stubbejopsis. Species are described as having actinomorphic flowers with five petals, five sepals, and a short corolla tube; the androecium typically bears five stamens; the gynoecium is bicarpellate with an inferior ovary. Fruits are commonly capsules or drupes.

Distributionally, Stubbejaceae is placed in evergreen tropical montane forests in a hypothetical Paleotropical region, where members are adapted to dappled shade and cool, misty conditions. Pollinators are presumed to be bees, with seed dispersal by gravity or small frugivores.

Etymology: The name derives from the presumed type genus Stubbeja, using the standard -aceae suffix. The designation is conceptual and used mainly in discussions of plant family concept and nomenclature rather than as an accepted real-world taxon.
