Stridulation refers to audible or sometimes infrasonic sounds generated when a body part bearing a file-like edge is moved against a corresponding scraper on another part.

Insects such as crickets and katydids are best known for stridulation. The sound is typically produced by rubbing specialized forewings (tegmina) or other appendages. The mechanism involves a file on one surface and a scraper on the other, converting friction into rhythmic sounds. In many species, males sing to attract mates or defend territory, while females may respond or remain silent depending on the species.

Triggers and patterns of stridulation vary with ecology. The rate and tempo of chirping often depend on temperature, time of day, humidity, and the insect’s hormonal or social state. Some studies use stridulation rates to estimate ambient temperature through general rules such as Dolbear’s law, though exact formulas vary by species.

Beyond crickets and katydids, a number of other arthropods and some arachnids possess stridulatory organs and use rubbing sounds for communication or defense. Functions include mate recognition, signaling of aggression or deterrence, and social interactions within species.
