Stopbumps

Stopbumps, also known as speed tables or raised crosswalks, are traffic calming devices that are elevated across the full width of a road. They are typically used in areas where vehicle speeds need to be reduced, such as residential streets, school zones, and pedestrian crossings. The primary purpose of stopbumps is to compel drivers to slow down by creating an unavoidable physical obstacle.

The design of stopbumps can vary, but they generally feature a gently sloping ramp on each side leading to a flat-topped section. The height and length of these ramps are engineered to provide a noticeable but not jarring change in elevation, encouraging a reduction in speed. They are often painted or marked with reflective materials to enhance visibility, especially at night or in adverse weather conditions.

Stopbumps are effective in reducing vehicle speeds and can also improve pedestrian safety by creating a more visible and defined crossing area. However, their implementation can sometimes lead to increased noise levels from vehicles passing over them and may cause discomfort for occupants if driven over too quickly.
