Stonepaved refers to surfaces that are paved with natural stones laid out in a deliberate arrangement. Common stone types include granite, basalt, limestone, sandstone, and marble. Stones may be cut into setts (cube-like blocks), cobbles (rounded stones), or flagstones (flat panels). Patterns such as running bond, herringbone, and irregular layouts are used to achieve different aesthetic and structural effects. A sub-base and bedding layer support the stones, while joints can be filled with mortar, concrete, or left open for drainage, depending on climate and use.

Construction typically involves preparing a stable foundation, placing stones in chosen patterns, and ensuring proper alignment and grading for drainage. In dry-set installations, joints are left without mortar to allow movement and permeability, whereas mortared joints increase rigidity and weather resistance. Maintenance considerations include periodic re-pointing or resetting of displaced stones, cleaning, or sealing where appropriate. Permeability can be preserved with open joints or permeable fillings, contributing to surface drainage and reduced runoff.

Stonepaving offers durability, a natural appearance, and long service life, making it a preferred choice for walkways, plazas, courtyards, and historical restoration projects. The cost is generally higher than that of asphalt or concrete, and irregular stone sizes require careful planning. In regions with freezing temperatures, proper drainage and appropriate jointing are important to minimize frost damage and movement. Stonepaved surfaces can be repaired selectively, providing longevity and the potential for aesthetically varied public and private spaces.
