Stomatabeheer refers to the specialized care and management of individuals with a stoma. A stoma, meaning mouth in Greek, is a surgically created opening on the abdomen that allows for the diversion of bodily waste, either urine or feces, into an external collection pouch. This procedure is often necessary due to medical conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, bowel cancer, or bladder cancer, as well as trauma.

Effective stomabeheer is crucial for maintaining the individual's quality of life, promoting healing, and preventing complications. This involves several key aspects. Firstly, proper stoma site care is essential to prevent skin irritation, infection, and breakdown around the stoma. This includes regular cleaning and the application of appropriate skin barriers and adhesives for the ostomy pouch.
