Stijlgebondenheid is a linguistic concept that refers to the dependence of certain meanings or pragmatic functions on the stylistic register in which a linguistic element occurs. The term is most often discussed in the context of Dutch and other Germanic languages, but similar phenomena are found in many languages. The premise is that words, phrasal constructions, and even whole sentences can acquire additional or altered senses when placed in a more formal, informal, literary, or colloquial style.

For example, the Dutch verb “schuldigen” (to blame) may appear in a formal legal document with a more technical nuance, whereas in everyday speech it is often replaced by “beschuldigen.” The meaning shift is not a lexical change but a shift that can be traced to the stylistic register. Likewise, the use of the diminutive can convey different degrees of affection or contempt depending on the style: in a friendly register it may express warmth, whereas in a critical style it can intensify the insult.

Stijlgebondenheid has implications for translation, corpus linguistics, and language pedagogy. Translators must be aware of the stylistic context to choose equivalent forms in target languages that preserve the same pragmatic force. Corpus studies show systematically different frequencies of morpho‑syntactic structures across registers, supporting the idea that style shapes meaning. A significant body of research in second‑language acquisition examines how learners acquire not only the grammatical forms of a register, but also the associated communicative functions and the subtleties of stijlgebonden meaning.
