StentIntervention is the branch of interventional medicine focused on the use of intravascular stents to treat luminal narrowing. It is most commonly applied within the coronary arteries, but also used in peripheral arteries and other lumens such as biliary and ureteral systems. The field encompasses device development, procedural technique, imaging guidance, and post-procedure care.

Device types include bare-metal stents, drug-eluting stents with antiproliferative coatings, and newer bioresorbable scaffolds. Stent selection considers lesion characteristics, vessel size, and patient risk. Design features address deliverability, radial strength, and biocompatibility; coatings influence thrombosis and restenosis. Research continues into polymer-free drug-eluting systems, bioresorbable technologies, and integrated imaging-enabled platforms.

Procedural aspects aim to restore vessel patency with minimal trauma. Planning uses noninvasive assessment and invasive imaging such as angiography, intravascular ultrasound, and optical coherence tomography. The procedure typically involves vascular access, catheter navigation to the lesion, lesion preparation as needed, stent deployment across the narrowed segment, and post-dilation for optimal apposition. Antiplatelet therapy and risk-factor management follow the intervention, with follow-up to monitor for restenosis or thrombosis.

Outcomes have improved substantially with modern stents, reducing restenosis and improving symptom relief, while bleeding and stent thrombosis remain concerns requiring careful patient selection and post-procedural care. The field is guided by professional societies and regulatory agencies, with ongoing trials evaluating new materials, coatings, and imaging strategies.
