Stellwerk
Stellwerk is the German term for a railway signalling control facility that manages train movements and route setting within a defined area. A Stellwerk coordinates signals, points (switches), derails, and train detection to ensure that routes are set safely and that conflicting movements cannot occur. Historically, Stellwerke were mechanical signal boxes using a lever frame, with each lever connected to a signal or a point. Operators would move levers to set routes; a mechanism called interlocking mechanically guaranteed that only safe combinations could be set.
With the advent of electrical engineering, lever frames were replaced or augmented by electromechanical interlockings and,
Equipment typically found in a Stellwerk includes signal displays, point machines or actuator circuits, track circuits
