Stavemades

Stavemades are a type of wooden boat construction where the hull is formed from staves, which are long, slightly curved planks. These staves are typically made from wood and are fitted together edge to edge. The characteristic shape of the staves allows them to form a curved hull when assembled. This method of boat building is one of the oldest and most widespread.

The process of building a stave-made boat involves first setting up a keel, which is the central structural member along the bottom of the boat. Ribs are then attached to the keel, forming the internal framework. The staves are then carefully fitted and fastened to these ribs, often with their edges grooved or beveled to ensure a tight seal. Caulking, a material like tar or oakum, is traditionally used to fill any gaps between the staves, making the hull watertight.

Stave construction is known for its strength and durability. It allows for the creation of sturdy vessels capable of withstanding significant stress, making it suitable for various types of boats, from small fishing vessels to larger ships. The technique is adaptable and has been used across many cultures and historical periods.
