Statusplanering

Statusplanering is a planning and reporting approach used in project, program, and operations management to define, track, and forecast the current and future status of a unit, system, or activity. It rests on a formal status model with defined categories, metrics, milestones, and governance rules for updates and actions. A typical statusplan includes status categories (for example, not started, in progress, delayed, completed, at risk), key performance indicators (time, budget, quality), milestones, risk and issue logs, resource use, and the required corrective actions. Data are collected from teams and systems, validated, and compiled into a status dashboard and a periodic report for decision-makers. The aim is to provide transparency, enable early warning of problems, support prioritization of actions and resources, and align stakeholders.

Applications span IT and software projects, construction and infrastructure programs, and ongoing maintenance or operations where progress and risks must be overseen. The process usually involves defining the scope and status model, establishing cadence and governance (roles such as status owner and steering body), collecting and validating data, updating indicators, reviewing with stakeholders, and communicating results while maintaining an auditable history. Benefits include improved transparency and risk management and faster corrective action; challenges include ensuring data quality, avoiding reporting overload, and preventing status gaming.
