Startstopjärjestelmien, known in English as start-stop systems, are an automotive feature designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. These systems automatically shut down the vehicle's engine when it is idling, such as at a traffic light or in stop-and-go traffic, and then restart it instantly when the driver is ready to move again. The primary goal is to eliminate unnecessary fuel burn and exhaust fumes produced while the vehicle is stationary.

The operation of a start-stop system relies on several components. A heavy-duty starter motor and battery are typically employed to handle the increased frequency of engine starts. Sophisticated engine management software monitors various conditions, such as brake pedal pressure, gear selection, and battery charge level, to determine when it is safe and appropriate to shut down or restart the engine. Driver input, such as releasing the clutch in a manual transmission vehicle or lifting their foot from the brake pedal in an automatic, usually triggers the restart sequence.

Benefits of start-stop systems include improved fuel efficiency, particularly in urban driving environments where frequent stops are common. This translates to lower running costs for the owner and a reduced environmental impact due to decreased CO2 emissions. However, some drivers may find the momentary engine shutdown and restart to be a minor distraction or inconvenience.
