Startschüsse

Startschüsse is the signal used to begin a timed event, most commonly in athletics. In practice it is the moment when an official fires a starting pistol or triggers an electronic device to indicate the official start of a race or competition. The start signal is designed to be immediate and unambiguous so that all competitors can react simultaneously and the official timing can commence.

The term is German, composed of Start (start) and Schuss (shot). In German-language sports reporting and regulation, Startschuss denotes the start signal for races and other timed events. The expression is also used figuratively to mean giving the go-ahead for a project or initiative.

Traditionally, a starter pistol fires blanks to avoid projecting anything into the crowd while producing a loud, single shot as the signal. In many modern competitions, electronic starting devices paired with audible signals and timing systems are used, sometimes eliminating live ammunition altogether for safety and consistency. In some disciplines such as swimming or indoor track, starting cues may be provided primarily by electronic systems, with a light or sound indicating the start.

In horse racing, for example, the Start is controlled by starting gates and a separate starter’s signal.
