Starikorgiga

Starikorgiga is a lesser-known traditional musical instrument originating from the rural regions of the Caucasus, particularly associated with the Ingush and Chechen cultures. The name "starikorgiga" translates roughly to "old man’s song" or "song of the elders," reflecting its role in preserving oral traditions and historical narratives. The instrument is a type of one-stringed fiddle, similar to the Georgian *chonguri* or the Ossetian *gongo*, but with distinct regional variations in construction and playing technique.

The body of the starikorgiga is typically carved from a single piece of wood, often walnut or oak, and features a small, rounded soundbox with a narrow neck. The single string, usually made from horsehair or synthetic fibers, is plucked or bowed to produce a deep, resonant tone. Some versions incorporate a small resonator or a hollowed-out gourd to amplify the sound, though this is not universal. The instrument is often played while seated, with the player resting the instrument on their knee and using a bow held in one hand while the other hand presses the string against the neck to alter pitch.
