Standardsprache is the codified form of a language that is used as the normative model in public life. It is the variety taught in schools, used in administration, media, literature, and formal discourse. In German-speaking areas, Standardsprache is commonly referred to as Standarddeutsch or Hochdeutsch and coexists with regional dialects and everyday spoken forms. While it serves as a common reference for mutual understanding, it is not a single uniform speech form; regional varieties and accents influence both spoken and written usage.

Historically, Standardsprache emerged with early modern standardization and the development of written German. The Luther Bible, the rise of print culture, and later grammars and dictionaries contributed to codification. In spoken form, a standardized pronunciation and grammar are often taught as a model, while speakers may switch to more local forms in informal settings. The standard also guides foreign-language teaching and language policy.

Relationship to dialects: Standardsprache coexists with regional dialects and sociolects. It is both a tool for social cohesion and a subject of sociolinguistic debate, balancing prescriptive norms with descriptive linguistics.
