It is not a formal standard, but a guiding idea in environments where components are assembled from independently usable pieces.

Core criteria commonly associated with standalonedefined items include explicit scope and boundaries that prevent ambiguity about what is included or excluded; machine-readable metadata such as identifiers, version, license, provenance, and formatting; a stable identifier that remains meaningful across versions; minimal external dependencies; and explicit versioning and changelists to support reproducibility.

Applications include knowledge graphs, educational resources, software documentation, data schemas, and content modules in content management systems. A standalonedefined module typically includes both the primary data or content and a metadata block that explains source, usage rights, and integration details, enabling reuse without requiring access to the wider collection.
