Stairlifts

Stairlifts are motorized devices designed to help people move between levels in buildings where stairs are a barrier. Consisting of a chair or platform mounted on a rail, they travel along a staircase to transport a user safely from one floor to another.

Straight stairlifts follow a straight track along straightforward stairs. Curved stairlifts use a custom curved track to accommodate bends. Platform lifts (or wheelchair lifts) carry a person in a seated or standing position on a platform and are suitable for wheelchair users. Outdoor models are built to withstand weather and are mounted on exterior stairs.

Most stairlifts are powered by an electric motor and include features such as a swivel seat, a footrest, a seat belt, and simple controls. A track is anchored to the staircase; a carriage carries the chair along the track. Many units have battery backups so they can operate during a power outage. Controls can be on the armrest, a remote, or a wall switch.

Installation requires professional assessment of the stairs, weight capacity, and mounting points. Straight tracks are easier and faster to install; curved tracks are more complex and custom-made. Safety features commonly include obstacle sensors on the track, automatic seat return, a swivel to face away from the stairs, and an emergency stop. Weight limits and maintenance requirements should be observed.

Stairlifts can improve independence and safety for people with mobility challenges, enabling access to multiple floors. They require periodic maintenance, including inspection of rails, track alignment, seat and belt function, and battery condition. Lifespan depends on usage and care, but many units provide long service with routine service visits.
