Spühtests, also known as spray tests, are a method used primarily in the automotive industry to detect leaks in sealed systems, particularly in air conditioning (A/C) and refrigeration circuits. The process involves introducing a specialized dye or tracer gas into the system and then using a UV light or electronic detector to identify any leaks by observing the dye’s fluorescence or the gas’s presence.

The test is commonly applied to vehicle air conditioning systems to ensure proper sealing before installation or after repairs. A UV dye is injected into the refrigerant circuit, and the system is pressurized. If a leak is present, the dye will escape through the leak point and can be detected under UV light, allowing technicians to pinpoint the exact location. This method is non-destructive and efficient, making it a preferred choice for diagnostic purposes.

Spühtests are also used in industrial settings to inspect sealed components such as hoses, valves, and joints in refrigeration and HVAC systems. The tracer gas method, which employs electronic sensors, is particularly useful for detecting microscopic leaks that may not be visible to the naked eye. This approach is often employed in high-precision applications where even minor leaks could compromise performance.

The effectiveness of a Spühtest depends on proper preparation, including thorough cleaning of the system to remove contaminants that could interfere with dye detection. While the test is reliable, it is not a substitute for pressure testing, which assesses the structural integrity of the system under operational conditions. When used correctly, Spühtests provide a quick and accurate way to identify leaks, reducing repair time and ensuring system efficiency.
