Spændingsrelaxation

Spændingsrelaxation, also known as stress relaxation, is a time-dependent phenomenon that occurs in viscoelastic materials when they are subjected to a constant strain. When a material is deformed to a certain extent and held at that deformation, the internal stresses within the material gradually decrease over time. This reduction in stress is a direct result of the material's molecular structure rearranging itself to accommodate the applied strain.

This process is a fundamental characteristic of viscoelasticity, a property that bridges the gap between purely elastic and purely viscous behavior. Elastic materials would maintain their stress indefinitely under a constant strain, while purely viscous materials would flow and relieve the stress completely. Viscoelastic materials, however, exhibit both elastic and viscous components.

The rate at which spændingsrelaxation occurs is dependent on several factors, including the material's composition, temperature, and the magnitude of the applied strain. Higher temperatures generally accelerate the relaxation process. Understanding spændingsrelaxation is crucial in various engineering applications, such as in the design of seals, O-rings, and composite materials, where the long-term integrity and performance of components under sustained load are critical.
