Spungen

Spungen is a surname of limited public use, most widely known through Nancy Spungen, an American woman (1958–1978) whose relationship with Sid Vicious, bassist of the Sex Pistols, made her a prominent figure in the 1970s punk scene. Born in Philadelphia, Spungen became part of the New York City punk milieu during the late 1970s. She died from a stab wound at the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan on October 12, 1978. Her boyfriend, Sid Vicious, was charged with her murder but died of a heroin overdose before the case went to trial. The circumstances of her death and their relationship attracted extensive media attention and have been the subject of biographies, documentaries, and the 1986 film Sid and Nancy, which portrays the couple's turbulent life together.

The surname Spungen is relatively rare and has no single, well-documented origin. Outside of Nancy Spungen,
