Host cities bid to stage events, and rights holders secure sponsorship, media rights, and other commercial partnerships. Scheduling and logistics require coordination with venues, transport, and local authorities.

They influence social cohesion and community participation while raising concerns about accessibility, doping, corruption in bidding and governance, security, and environmental impact. Increasing emphasis is placed on sustainability and legacy planning.
