Spokesman

Spokesman is an individual authorized to speak on behalf of an organization, government, or other entity. The role includes communicating official positions, delivering statements, and responding to questions from the media and the public. Because the term is gendered, many organizations prefer the gender-neutral "spokesperson" or may use related titles such as communications officer.

Spokesmen may prepare and present press releases, hold press conferences, brief other staff, and coordinate with legal and policy teams to ensure accuracy and compliance. In government and politics, they may provide policy clarifications, announce new initiatives, and offer official responses to crises. In business, they often handle investor inquiries and media relations.

An appointed spokesman acts within the authority granted by the organization. Their statements reflect official policy or approved positions and may not reveal confidential information or speculation. They can be held accountable for misrepresentation, and corrections or retractions may be issued if inaccurate.

Spokesmen are typically selected by senior management, communications departments, or legal counsel; they may have backgrounds in journalism, public relations, or public affairs and may undergo media training to handle interviews, crisis communications, and message discipline.
