Spleißdosen

Spleißdosen are protective enclosures designed to house splice connections between cables, protecting the joints from mechanical damage, dust and moisture. They are used in telecommunications, data networks and electrical installations, both indoors and outdoors. The term covers enclosures for fiber optic splices as well as copper conductor splices, depending on design.

In fiber optic applications, Spleißdosen typically include a splice tray for organizing individual fiber splices, a channel or pockets for routing fibers, and facilities for slack storage. They provide strain relief where cables enter the enclosure and sealing to prevent moisture ingress. In copper installations, they protect field-spliced or pre-terminated conductors and may accommodate crimped or soldered joints in a sealed environment.

Construction and design vary by model. Common materials include durable plastics such as polycarbonate or ABS for indoor use, and weatherproof plastics or metal for outdoor use. Outdoor enclosures are designed to resist dust and water ingress and often feature gaskets, weather seals and sealed entry glands. Splice capacity ranges from a few splices to many, with adjustable or fixed splice trays. Some models are wall-mountable or surface-mounted, while others are portable or integrated into larger cabinet systems.

Installation considerations include selecting a model with appropriate ingress protection, ensuring proper cable sealing at entry points, and providing adequate management of cable slack to prevent bend radius violations. After installation, regular inspection of seals and the condition of splices is recommended to maintain long-term reliability.
