Spielweise (literally “the way of playing”) denotes the characteristic manner in which a person or a team plays a game. It encompasses recurring habits in technique, tactics, tempo and decision-making that shape how a game is approached and how progress is pursued.

The term is used across sports, board games and digital games. In German-language sports journalism and analysis, it describes the typical approach of players, teams or coaches and how this approach influences outcomes against various opponents or under different match situations.

Key components include tempo and rhythm (fast or deliberate buildup), risk tolerance (safe versus speculative choices), technical preferences (dribbling, passing, shooting), and tactical philosophy (possession-based play, direct play, high- or low-pressing, and positional buildup versus long-ball strategies).

Determinants are diverse: training methods, coaching philosophy, player skills and roles, team cohesion, and contextual factors such as league style, stadium conditions or injuries. Flexibility to adapt the Spielweise to the opponent is also relevant.

Assessment of Spielweise is often qualitative and comparative. Analysts label a style as offensive or defensive, proactive or reactive, or structured versus unstructured, and relate it to strengths, weaknesses and expected matchups. Quantitative metrics such as possession, passing accuracy, passing tempo, and pressing intensity can support the analysis.

Beyond team sport, the term also applies to chess, esports and other competitive activities, where a player's or team's Spielweise describes their preference for positional play, tactical aggression, prophylaxis, or strategic restraint.
