Sphaerodactylids

Sphaerodactylids are a family of lizards native to the Caribbean islands, including Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. They are known for their small to medium size, typically ranging from 10 to 20 centimeters in length, and their distinctive, rounded bodies. The family includes several genera, with the most well-known being Sphaerodactylus, which is the type genus.

Sphaerodactylids are often referred to as "sphynx lizards" due to their resemblance to the ancient Egyptian sphinx, with their upturned snouts and distinctive head crests. They are primarily terrestrial, although some species are semi-aquatic. Their diet consists mainly of insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates.

The family is notable for its diverse array of colors and patterns, which can include shades of brown, green, and gray, as well as various stripes and spots. This diversity is thought to be an adaptation for camouflage, helping them to blend into their surroundings and avoid predators.
