Specifikasjonen

Specifikasjonen is a formal document that defines the requirements, behaviors, and interfaces of a system, product, or process. In Norwegian technical practice it serves as the authoritative reference for what a project must deliver and how it should function, from stakeholders’ needs to measurable performance.

The primary purpose of spesifikasjonen is to establish a common understanding among clients, engineers, designers, testers, and suppliers. It guides design decisions, supports procurement and compliance activities, and provides criteria for verification and validation. Because it is typically treated as a baseline, changes to it are controlled and documented to preserve traceability across the project lifecycle.

A typical spesifikasjonen includes several elements: the project scope and objectives, a system overview, functional requirements that describe what the system must do, and non-functional requirements such as performance, reliability, security, and usability. It also specifies interfaces, data models, standards, constraints, acceptance criteria, and planned validation or test methods. Versioning and a traceability matrix are often used to link requirements to design decisions and test cases.

They are created through collaboration among stakeholders and are maintained as living documents, updated as new needs emerge or constraints change. International and industry standards, such as ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148, influence structure and terminology, while many organizations adopt internal templates to ensure consistency.
