Spandexbased

Spandexbased refers to fabrics or products whose elasticity is primarily provided by spandex fibers. In typical textile use, spandex is blended with other fibers to create materials that stretch and recover shape while preserving texture, weight, and hand from the base material.

Spandex is a synthetic polymer known as elastane or Lycra. It is a segmented polyurethane that offers exceptional elasticity, generally enabling around five times its original length before permanent set. In spandexbased fabrics, spandex content usually ranges from a few percent up to roughly 40 percent, depending on performance needs.

Common blends include cotton-spandex, polyester-spandex, and nylon-spandex. Fabrics are produced in various constructions such as jersey, interlock, rib, and stretch denim, all designed to maximize stretch, recovery, and fit while maintaining comfort and breathability.

Applications of spandexbased materials are widespread in sportswear, swimwear, undergarments, and medical compression garments. They are also used in dancewear, outerwear with added stretch, and performance textiles where movement and shape retention are important.

Care and durability considerations include heat sensitivity and chemical exposure. Spandex can degrade under high temperatures, chlorine, and prolonged UV exposure, reducing elasticity over time. Routine care usually involves cool or warm wash and avoiding excessive heat in dryers; blends can influence longevity.

Environmental aspects reflect that spandex is petrochemical-based and blends complicate recycling. Research has focused on recycling blends and developing alternative polyurethanes and bio-based elastomers, but end-of-life options remain limited for many spandexbased fabrics.
