SourceIPAdresse, or source IP address, refers to the IP address of the device that initiates a network communication. In both IPv4 and IPv6, the source address is carried in the header of each IP packet, identifying the sender’s network endpoint. It is a key piece of information used by receiving systems to know where to send responses.

In a typical exchange, the source IP allows the recipient to route replies back to the originator. Network devices rely on routing tables to forward packets toward their destinations, while end systems may log the source IP for auditing, access control, rate limiting, and analytics. In networks that employ Network Address Translation (NAT), devices inside a private network may appear with a shared public source address to external observers, with the NAT device translating internal addresses to the public one.

Limitations and considerations include privacy and security aspects. The source IP can be spoofed in certain contexts, especially with UDP or denial-of-service attacks, though establishing a reliable connection (as with TCP) provides some defense against spoofed responses. Dynamic IP assignment means the source can change over time, and NAT or proxies can obscure the original device. IPv6 privacy extensions can also rotate addresses to reduce traceability. Some deployments preserve the original client IP via application-layer headers or upstream logs, but such headers (e.g., X-Forwarded-For) can be forged.

Applications and related concepts encompass firewall rules, intrusion detection systems, and traffic analysis. The apparent source IP may be affected by load balancers or content delivery networks, in which case the true client IP is often conveyed by additional headers or coordinated logging across network components.
