Sorthingen

Sorthingen is a small town and municipality in the central lowlands of Verdoria. Covering about 20 square kilometers, it sits near the Verd River and had a population of around 7,200 in recent estimates. The surrounding countryside is agricultural, with patches of woodland.

The town's core dates to the medieval period, centered on a market square and parish church. It gained town rights in the 14th century and developed as a regional market and crafts hub. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century spurred industrial growth, particularly in textiles and milling.

Today, Sorthingen's economy is diversified. Light manufacturing, logistics, and services predominate. The town hosts a small industrial park, a regional hospital, and a secondary school. Agriculture remains a significant part of the local economy, especially dairy and crops.

Notable sites include the Baroque Town Hall built in 1772, the Gothic-styled Saint Nikolaus Church, and a local history museum. An annual harvest festival and a weekly farmers market reflect the town's agrarian roots.

Sorthingen has a municipal council and a directly elected mayor. It is part of a larger inter-municipal association for regional planning and shared services, including waste management and public transport.

The town is connected by regional roads and an hourly rail service to the regional capital and neighboring towns. Local bus lines link residential neighborhoods with the town center.
