Solidstatekomponenter, often referred to as solid-state devices, are electronic components that utilize the physical properties of solid materials, typically semiconductors, to conduct or resist electric current. Unlike their vacuum tube predecessors, solid-state components have no moving parts and operate entirely through the behavior of electrons within these solid materials. This fundamental difference leads to significant advantages in terms of size, power consumption, reliability, and speed.

The most ubiquitous example of a solid-state component is the transistor. Transistors act as electronic switches or amplifiers, forming the building blocks of virtually all modern electronic circuits, from simple radios to complex microprocessors. Other key solid-state components include diodes, which allow current to flow in only one direction, and integrated circuits (ICs), which contain vast numbers of transistors and other components fabricated onto a single semiconductor chip.

The development of solid-state technology began in the early 20th century with the invention of the germanium point-contact transistor in 1947, followed by the silicon junction transistor. Silicon quickly became the dominant material due to its abundance, stability, and favorable electronic properties. The ongoing miniaturization and improvement of solid-state components, governed by Moore's Law, have driven the digital revolution, enabling the creation of increasingly powerful and compact electronic devices that are integral to contemporary life.
