Soapstone

Soapstone, also known as steatite, is a metamorphic rock dominated by talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2) with variable amounts of magnesite, dolomite, and chlorite. The name comes from the soft, soapy feel of the surface. Soapstone forms by low-grade metamorphism of magnesium-rich rocks such as serpentinite, often in zones with hydrothermal activity that introduces talc.

Physical properties: It is very soft (Mohs hardness about 1.5–2) and can be carved with simple tools. It has high heat resistance and good thermal inertia, making it suitable for heat-exposed uses. It is relatively chemically inert and weathering is slow. Colors range from green to gray, brown, or black, depending on impurities.

Uses: Soapstone has long been used for sculpture and carving, and is also popular for kitchen countertops, sinks, and stoves because it can withstand high temperatures and is easy to work with. It is also used for architectural elements, tiles, and laboratory benches.

Care and handling: Soapstone surfaces can scratch; fine scratches can be polished out. They may darken with age or when oiled, and many users apply mineral oil or wax to enrich color, though this is optional.

Distribution and production: Soapstone is quarried worldwide. Notable producers include Brazil, Finland, India, and the United States (for example, Vermont).
