Sniovat

Sniovat is a city and commune in the northern Valeria region, situated along the Sniov River. The name derives from the Sniov language and is commonly translated as "meeting point." The municipality covers roughly 120 square kilometers and forms part of the Valerian provincial system.

It sits in a broad river valley with forests to the west and agricultural land to the east. The climate is temperate, with warm summers and cold winters, moderated by the river.

Sniovat originated as a trading post established in the 12th century. Its role expanded during the 16th century with wood and salt trade. The town rebuilt after a major earthquake in the early 18th century, and railway access in the early 20th century spurred industrial growth.

As of the latest census, around 28,000 people reside in Sniovat. The population is predominantly Valerian with smaller Sniov and migrant communities. The two main languages are Valerian and Sniov; religion is diverse, with a secular majority.

The economy is mixed, with light manufacturing, food processing, and service sectors. Local industry includes textiles and machinery components, while tourism centers on the historic core beside the river.

Sniovat preserves a historic Market Square, an old fortification, and a pedestrian riverfront. The city hosts an annual River Festival and a weekly farmers market. Public services include a district hospital, two secondary schools, and a technical college. Transportation is supported by a regional rail line and provincial bus network.
