SnC4H93, more commonly written as Sn(C4H9)3, is the chemical formula for tributyltin. The compound consists of a tin atom bonded to three butyl groups, each with the empirical formula C4H9. Tributyltin is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic odor and is soluble in many organic solvents such as hexane, toluene and chloroform.

The molecule is structurally tetrahedral around the tin center, with each butyl substituent acting as a sigma donor. It is synthesized by the Stille coupling of tin(II) chloride with organoboron reagents, or by direct addition of butyl Grignard to tin(II) chloride. In the laboratory, tributyltin is often handled under inert atmosphere to prevent hydrolysis to tin salts and the release of volatile organotin species.

Tributyltin has found extensive use as a biocidal agent, particularly in antifouling paints applied to marine vessels to prevent the attachment of barnacles and algae. It has also been employed as a catalyst in polymerization reactions, such as the polymerization of styrene and isoprene. In addition, it serves as a reagent in organic synthesis for the protection of alcohols and for various alkylation reactions.

Due to its bioaccumulative nature and high toxicity to aquatic life, tributyltin is subject to strict regulatory controls. The compound is classified as a persistent organic pollutant (POP) and its use in many countries has been restricted or banned. Exposure to tributyltin can disrupt endocrine function in wildlife and cause developmental defects in marine organisms. Consequently, alternatives to tributyltin are actively pursued in both industrial and environmental remediation contexts.
