Smutsia
Smutsia is an extinct genus of anteaters in the family Myrmecophagidae, known from fossil records in Africa. The genus comprises two described species: Smutsia gigantea and Smutsia sudanensis. Based on fragmentary remains, Smutsia represented large-bodied anteaters with stocky builds and substantial forelimbs.
Physical characteristics of Smutsia likely included elongated snouts and long, sticky tongues adapted for feeding on
Ecology and behavior are inferred from their anatomy and the ecological roles of related anteaters. Smutsia
Distribution and timing are known from African fossil deposits, including sites in Sudan and other regions
Taxonomy and evolution place Smutsia within Myrmecophagidae as the African lineage of anteaters, alongside other genera
