Skullcrushers

Skullcrushers, also known as lying triceps extensions, are an isolation exercise that targets the triceps brachii muscle. This exercise involves lying on a bench with a barbell or dumbbells held overhead, then lowering the weight towards the forehead by bending the elbows, and finally extending the arms back to the starting position. The name "skullcrushers" comes from the potential danger of dropping the weight on one's head if form is not maintained.

Proper execution of skullcrushers requires a controlled movement. The elbows should remain relatively stationary throughout the exercise, with the primary motion occurring at the elbow joint. Beginners are often advised to use lighter weights or EZ-curl bars to reduce stress on the wrists and elbows. Variations exist, such as using dumbbells, cable machines, or performing the exercise while seated or standing.

The primary muscle worked is the triceps brachii, specifically the lateral and long heads. Secondary muscles involved include the anconeus and forearm extensors. Due to the potential for injury, particularly to the elbows and wrists, skullcrushers should be performed with caution and proper technique. Overloading the weight or using jerky movements can increase the risk of strains or sprains. It is important to warm up adequately before performing this exercise and to focus on a full range of motion with controlled descent and ascent.
